​First developed by the Momotaro Japanese Koi farm, the bakki shower attempts to simulate natures way of filtering water. Similar to a mountain stream where water cascades over rocks.Biofilms and algae grow on the rocks and feed on the nutrients in the stream, essentially filtering the water. In the case of the Bakki shower, ceramic is placed in trays and the water pumped to the top of the filter and trickles through the media, eventually flowing back to the pond.Momotaro Koi Farms developed the bakki shower with stainless steel trays. Since that time many "DIY bakki showers" have been designed with variations on the them. Plastic and fiberglass boxes or crates have been used with success.

Well the Basic concept is to jut water tricle down of difrent kind of media - ist stage is a mechanical filteration this stage removes the solid waste from entering the lower trays which ensure the porous media is not clogged and can can form effective bio-films - thus ensuring a more efficient filteration .

 

You can do with one layer of mechanical filteration but two would work better the sevies of the second layer finer than the other .

 

And the choice of filte media depends on the person and the budget - But to grow anerobic bactria who

"break down" The nitrates to harmless nitrogen gas by "anaerobic" bacteria, which only live in an oxygen poor environment.you need filter media with deep pores and have to invest in costly ceramic media .

 

The media is out of reach of the pockets of the average Indian Japanese koi lover as theis means that the marterial is double baked so that it splinters with more pores . (imagine ceramic lighly popped like a pop corn ) this process as a high energy demand and hence costly .
